Morgan Dollar Mintage and Mint Marks
The Morgan Dollar mintage numbers vary a lot from the key date 1893-S at the low number of 100,000 over to almost 90,000,000 for the 1921 series which was making up for melted coins due to the Pittman act. The mintage numbers don’t necessarily translate to value for all of the years because some issues were affected by melting, which can make a higher mintage coin more valuable than you would think. There was also dispersal of hoards, which can make a lower mintage year more valuable than the numbers would suggest. The mint mark location of the Morgan Dollar is located on the reverse over the “O” in Dollar. D is for Denver, S is for San Francisco, O is for New Orleans, CC is for Carson City, and P is for Philadelphia. If there is no mint mark, then it was struck in Philadelphia.
